OBITUARY: Joseph P. Ballman, one of the oldest employees of the Pennsylvania railroad company in this city, died Saturday morning at his home, 28 Swinney Avenue, of old age. The deceased was 81 years of age, and for the last eight years, he had retired from active work, resigning his post as watchman for the railroad company at Fairfield Avenue, which he had held for many years. Mr. Ballman was born in 1820 in Baden, Germany, and came to this country at the age of 32. He took up his residence for a short time in Philadelphia, and then came to Indiana, settling in Avilla. In 1867 he removed to this city, and had lived here ever since. A widow and seven daughters survive him. Mrs. John Ehinger of Gar Creek, Mrs. Amanda Huhn of Huntington, Mrs. Henry Huhn of this city, Mrs. John Horsch of Chicago, the Misses Carrie and Katie Ballman of this city and Sister Mary Fides of the Order of Poor Handmaids of Christ. There are fourteen grandchildren. Mr. Ballman was sincerely religious, and a devoted member of St. Paul's Catholic Church. He was also connected with the St. Boniface Benevolent Society of the church. The funeral will take place Tuesday morning at 8:30 from the residence, and at 9 o'clock from St. Paul's Catholic Church.

OBITUARY: Mrs. Johanna Ballman, widow of the late Joseph Ballman, and for forty years a resident of Fort Wayne, died at 11:45 o'clock today at her home, 1036 Swinney Avenue, from Bright's Disease, at the age of 68 years. Mrs. Ballman was born in Germany, June 2, 1838, came to American in 1852, living for a short time in New Jersey and Pennsylvania, and coming to Fort Wayne in 1867. She was married in Pennsylvania to Joseph Ballman in 1854. Mrs. Ballman was a well known and highly respected, a devoted member of St. Paul Catholic Church, and of the Rosary and Altar societies of that congregation. Surviving relatives include seven children - Mrs. J. Ehinger of Gar Creek, Mrs. Amand Huhn and Mrs. H. Huhn of this city, Mrs. J. Horsch of Chicago, and the Misses Carrie and Catherine Ballman of this city. Thre are seventeen grandchildren and one brother, Otto Gunckel of this city. Funeral servies Monday morning at 8:30 from the residence and at 9 o'clock from St. Paul Catholic Church.

NOTES: He was a farmer and lived a few miles outside of present New Haven; probably about five miles. Deeds to and from him are recorded in New Haven of dates from 1734 to April 16, 1777. In these, New Haven is given as his residence. He moved to Barkhamstead in January, 1777. In colonial records he is named as one of those who in 1739, petitioned the First Parish or Society of New Haven "to be annexed to the Parish of New Cheshire in town of Wallingford; on account of their distance from New Haven Parish." Records of Mt. Carmel Congregational Society show that he and his son Daniel were members thereof in 1767.

NOTES: Arthur Rexford and Elizabeth Stevens were married in New Haven, CT., September 3rd, 1702, by John Alling, Justice. He is mentioned several times in Colonial Records, the earliest date being 1702. The same records speak of him as Master of "Sloop Rose" as late as 1712. He died in New Haven, February 1st 1728. A copy of his will is in the office of the Probate Court at New Haven. It bears the date of his death. It directs his executors to dispose of his estate in England.
